SAINT GERMAIN DES PRES - Karen and Tony April 17th
Let’s step away from the noise of modern Paris and slip into a quieter world. Our walk begins in Passage Dauphine, a cobblestoned hidden passageway where time seems to slow down.
Just a few steps away lies the enchanting Cour du Commerce Saint-André where we can almost still hear the printing presses working in secret during the French Revolution, revolutionary pamphlets circulating hand to hand, whispers of change from the Procope café. This courtyard once pulsed with the energy of ideas that would transform France forever.
We continue to the intimate Place de Furstemberg, perhaps one of the most romantic squares in Paris, like a film set. There we could have a peek at Delacroix's house and studio!
Then around the corner, we enter the surprisingly colorful Église de Saint-Germain-des-Prés. This is not just a church — it is the oldest one in Paris, founded in the 6th century. Upon exiting, we are immersed in the vibrant neighborhood around it, which once was the beating heart of intellectual Paris: writers, philosophers, and jazz musicians filled smoky cafés with debate and music long into the night.
A few steps away we are stumbling upon the imposing and theatrical façade of Église Saint-Sulpice where we can admire Eugène Delacroix paintings and work our minds around the elaborate sundial!!
Finally, we reach the elegant and lively the Jardin du Luxembourg. After narrow streets and hidden corners, the garden opens like a breath of fresh air. Children sail toy boats across the fountain. Locals read quietly in green metal chairs. Statues of queens stand in silent dignity.
Here, Saint-Germain reveals its final secret: it is not just a neighborhood. It is a mood. A rhythm. A place where history, art, revolution, and everyday Parisian life continue to intertwine elegantly!
